Cheat Mountain Challenge Century Rides Minimize

August 15, 2009  Snowshoe Mountain, WV

Cheat Mountain Challenge

"I would rate the Cheat Mountain Challenge a 9-10 across the board. It was impressive how organized and well thought out the event was. The volunteers were excellent they should be commended. The ride was as beautiful as it was challenging.
Thanks for a wonderful experience."

...................................................................................

Ride with us this summer through the beautiful mountains of West Virginia ...

With 10,000 vertical feet of climbing spread out across 105 miles of beautiful West Virginia back roads, including a 22 mile section of the Highland Scenic Highway (the highest elevated road in the East) the CMC is the ride for you.

It offers challenging climbs, thrilling downhills and some of the most spectacular vistas found in the country.  It is fully supported with staffed rest stops complete with food and beverage, a SAG with mechanics on board, and a Blues, Brews and BBQ event waiting at the finish (and a finishing gift from us.)

Did you know that the WV Cycling Foundation is the organizer of the Cheat Mountain Challenge?  We realized that many riders were unaware of the Foundation and the work we do to promote cycling in WV so we plan to share more information about the good works we are able to do as a result of your support of our ride.  The ride is our major fundraiser.

If you participated in the ride in 2008 and were supported by the children at the event's last two rest stops then you met first hand some of the low-income children the Foundation is sponsoring.  You will see some of those same children back in 2009 but this time they will be on bikes.  If you would like to see a recap of their experience from this year, please visit the article about them on the o!Pam (online physical activity magazine.)

Meals will not be available Minimize

We had originally planned to serve breakfast and a post-ride meal with the ride.  We needed to sell 40 meals in order to provide that service and we have not met that requirement, therefore the meals will not be served.  For those who did purchase them, your money will be refunded.

Massages Minimize

Tuscan Spa will be providing massages at the finsih line for $1 per minute.  Sign up for your massage when your register!

Be an ambassador Minimize

We have listened closely to your comments and suggestions.  We want to build an event that brings you back year after year.  We want this event to grow dramatically.  We know the best way to do that is by word of mouth.  We want you to talk about us and spread the word!

We want to reward you for bringing people to the event!  We have added an area on BikeReg where riders can add the name of the person who recommended them.  If someone sent you, give us their name.  If we see it 5 or more times, we are writing them a check for $5 per person!  Wow!

My name is Kim Broughton and I am the 2009 event director.  Please feel free to contact me at kimberlyjoshi@gmail.com so that we can discuss the benefits of the ambassador rewards.  I look forward to hearing from you!

Customized ride numbers and t-shirts Minimize

Custom ride numberWe really appreciate those who participate in our ride.  We look forward to seeing the same faces back each year and new ones as well.  We have made two changes that make the event more personal.

First, we will be giving every rider the opportunity to have a custom ride number that will be an event keepsake, in addition to their passport for access to event support and privileges.  For those who registered by the first cut-off of April 1, 2009, your first name will be printed on your ride tag in addition to a number.

If you registered by the second cut-off date, July 1, 2009, your name will be included on the t-shirt as well with all other participants who have signed up by then.  T-shirts are available for sale with registration and we have added some sizes as requested.  Many thanks to John, a previous participant  for suggesting adding names to the shirts.  We love the idea!

High quality maps Minimize

We have found out from your comments and suggestions that many of you would like to ride the century routes at times in addition to the date of our event.

Of course, we are honored as of one of the top 10 road rides according to Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine.

Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine

Moreover, since  one of the goals of the Foundation is to support the creation, implementation and maintenance of biking facilities in the state to include on and off road cycling routes, it only makes sense to solidify the courses by creating a map of these amazing routes so that anyone can ride them at any time.

Not only are we creating a tourism quality map for the event, the map format will be used as a template so that other fabulous rides in the state can be dropped into.  This will give cyclists a selection of amazing road rides to pick from when thinking of the place to go to for their next ride.

The maps will be given to every rider who registers for the event in lieu of the traditional t-shirts that are given with registration.  We appreciate your support of this project and thank you for helping us continue to expand biking opportunities in Almost Heaven West Virginia.

Event staff Minimize

Kim Broughton 2009 Event DirectorHi!  My name is Kim Broughton and I am the 2009 event director.  I am working with ride director, Dan Neal to plan the best event we have ever had!

Dan has been with the event for many years and is the one responsible for the amazing and fabulous rest stop staff that has consistently received superior ratings for their amazing attitude and support!  Indeed, those folks are the reason I took notice of the event while riding it in 2007.  I was so impressed with the staff I had to call and ask, "Who are you guys?"  I have been an event director for over a decade and am proud and excited to be involved with the Cheat Mountain Challenge.

We welcome your comments and suggestions and look forward to a fabulous event in 2009!  You can reach me by email at kimberlyjoshi@gmail.com.  I look forward to hearing from you.  Photo courtesy of Jason Scott Means
